The Reason for the Season

On a dark Judean hillside, a group of shepherds were tending their sheep and goat flocks. It was a dark, early fall night, likely in the year 4 B.C.  Shepherding was a vital occupation to their culture, handed down from fathers to sons. It could be dangerous at times, protecting their flocks of goats and sheep from predators and thieves. But, by and large, it was sheer boredom, moving a group of animals that were notorious for being uncooperative.

This night would be very different.  The lives of these simple shepherds would be interrupted and changed forever.  In Luke 2:9, an account is given which describes what happened: an angel of the Lord suddenly appears. His brilliant radiance illuminated the entire surrounding area. For good reason, they were terrified!  The angel’s message to them was quite simple: “Fear not, for I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11).  It was the most important news ever, the hoped-for Messiah, a Savior for his people, and eventually, years later, the perfect sacrifice for all human sin had been born. This was God’s reason for the season.

As Luke’s narrative continues, the angelic enthusiasm expands as an entire group of new angels join in. They were singing praises! Their passion for the birth of Jesus was nothing new to them. They had been worshipping him for a millennium. Now, they were serving as God’s heralds, announcing to all of humanity the arrival of the King of Kings, Savior of the World, and the Son of God. They knew the reason for the season!

Christmas is a special time of the year here at Christ’s Body Ministries. 2020 has been a unique year in so many ways! But this fact remains: We are so honored to serve as daily ambassadors for Jesus to the homeless community in Denver. Everyone on our team of staff and volunteers work hard to convey the real reason for the season to those who come through our daily street outreaches, respite and residential programs, and other services.  At times, it is not easy nor well received by our guests, many of whom are desperate, scared, and sick. But we know this to be true: that on a dark Judean night, God arrived in the form of a baby in an animal feeding trough and He changed the world! Thank you for your prayers, volunteer time, and financial support of our work. Thanking you for helping us share the real reason for the season.

Seize the moment recap

Innovation has been the name of the game in 2020. This year has caused Christ’s Body, like so many organizations, to re-think, examine, and re-imagine how to do our work. There have been many firsts as well, one being for CBM, an end-of-the-year online fundraiser through FB Live called Seize the Moment! We are hoping most of you have watched it already, if not, please visit our FB page and see How God has led us during 2020! It has been rewarding to help and introduce more people to Jesus this year, and for that we are grateful.

outreach update

Thanksgiving week was a week of many blessings for us this year, and for this, we are very thankful! Church groups supplied all the turkey and fixings for two different meals and several came to help serve their delightful meals.  Along with the turkeys, we were supplied with 800 homemade, delicious, individually wrapped desserts - enough to supply our homeless friends with desserts for the entire week!   This added a special touch to our thanksgiving offerings.

lots of volunteers and homeless friends at this thanksgiving meal

We also saw a large increase in the number of volunteers who were able to serve with us throughout the thanksgiving week.  It was wonderful to meet so many new faces and hit the streets with them.  All of our volunteers brought a wonderful excitement and love to our homeless friends on the street.

On top of this, we received many unique, hand-knitted donations that we were able to bless others with.  Hand-knit hats and gloves, and hand-knit 'prayer scarves'... these items allowed us to share a special story while giving them to our homeless friends and point to how God provides and is constantly reaching out in love to His precious creation.

Thank you for your support of our ministry and prayers during this holiday season!  It is a delight to come into the building and see the many ways that God uses His own people to uplift and provide!

the shower guy

Meet Don Hahl, shower guy extraordinaire.    Why on earth is this fella called the “shower guy,” you may ask?   Glad you did, although the title may just give it away.  Don has been volunteering with us at CB for the last 10 years or so and for the majority of his time with us, he has been running our shower operation here on 850 Lincoln Street.   Don does a fabulous job at running the showers because of his fun, outgoing personality.  He has managed the ins and outs of our showers, cleaning the showers, and making sure that our guests have everything they need to freshen up for so many years because “it is such a good opportunity to get to know people.”

Since our pause to in-house showers and pivot to mobile outreach Don still continues to be a big light of our volunteer team.  Lately, Don has been volunteering on our street outreaches and handing out clothing items, pointing people to resources, encouraging our dear friends on the streets, and praying with them.  He can also be seen making burritos and visiting with long-time friends as he volunteers, but there is not a day that goes by that Don doesn’t ask “where are my showers?” and proclaim “I am the shower guy!”

Don has explored and continues to discover his 'Godly’ passions of reaching out to and supporting others here at Christ’s Body Ministries, but one other incredibly fun thing about Don is his “earthly passion” as a Competitive Laser Masters Sailor.

For the last 20 years, Don has traveled around the globe along with Judith, his wife of 38 years, and competed in Laser Sailing events.   A laser is a smaller sailboat that is about 14 feet long.  Competing in one of these boats is a solo endeavor. On any given race day, Don completes three or four 45minute races and competes with anywhere from 20-50 other boats.

don enjoys his free time on the water

Don has attended world championships in Holland, Ireland, Spain, and Australia and in fact just got back from Australia this past September.   He enjoys the comradery that the sport has to offer and loves the fact that laser sailing is just good wholesome fun!    If you ever get a chance to meet Don, make sure you get the skinny on Laser Sailing.  It is a hoot.

Shower guy, we are thankful for you.  You bring an enthusiasm and fun humor to our team that is unmatched.   Although our showers have been postponed since the onset of COVID, we look forward to putting you at the helm of a mobile shower truck in the near future!  After ARE the shower guy.
